Carl grew up sailing the original Audax which his father had commissioned and built on the Chesapeake. She was designed to be a fast cruiser and racer with the ability to plane due to her relatively flat bottom sections. Carl had dreamed for years of using the original plans and building a 1/6 scale model of the original Audax. After building the T65 Carl called me to talk about the possibility of my taking the hull sections off of the plans and cutting out forms for a strongback. We also cut special long cedar planking for the 6+ foot Audax model. Now Carl is just waiting for us to complete the sails to rig on the eight foot mast.
Here is the original Audax sailing on the Chesapeake in Carl's youth. This was Carl's Dad's boat:
After building his two T37s and his T65, Carl fit in another project building this full size rowing skiff before beginning his T47 Schooner and Audax.
Another of Carl's wonderful projects was completing this model of the Larchmont O racing sloop. The model was begun by Carl's father 75 years earlier, but never rigged. Carl added radio control and ordered a set of custom sails from Tippecanoe to complete this beautiful yacht.
Bravo, Carl, on all of these splendid model yachts! There is simply nothing half so much worth doing as messing about with boats! And thank you Dick for suggesting the idea of awarding Master Craftsmanship awards for outstanding builders!
