Kauai

Here we are with the whole crew after a week of camping. We have just taken up our tent which had been standing on this exact spot several minutes before. This was our favorite camp ground. It was called Salt Pond because of the old salt pans beside the campground that had been formed in the red clay and flooded with sea water to harvest the salt. These salt pans had been used for many generations and are still operated by hand on a reduced scale. In different cavities there are different concentrations of brine being evaporated by the sun. Finally the brine is bailed or pumped into large shallow pans where the salt crystals form as the last of the water evaporates.

Robyn and Laine loved camping and we had a super time together as a family, swimming and playing with the T15 Racing Sloop and exploring the island.
