RC Trimaran T50/3 - Fast RC Sailboat
For the ultimate in RC sailing speed, this ultra-light rc trimaran is a blast to sail. She takes off with very fast acceleration and leaves any rc monohull sailboat far behind. Ultra-light, stiff carbon fiber spars connect the hulls. She is rigged with spectra fiber for her stays (the same fiber that is used in bullet proof vests). The hulls are built from a thin 1/16th inch three lam plywood, very light, but strong. The hulls are constructed with the best boatbuilding epoxy for strength and light weight. The main hull is 50 inches long. There are two rigs, the standard rig has a mast that is 5 feet 4 inches long. The light air rig has a mast that is 6 feet 7 inches long. Upwind performance is very good. Stability is very good. In our heavy wind testing we have not been able to make the boat capsize in winds gusting to18 mph with 6 inch waves. For such a big rc sailboat, it is important that the boat can be taken apart easily for transportation. The T50/3 unrigs and the hulls and crosspieces come off in about 3 minutes. Assembling the hulls and rigging the mast takes about the same amount of time. The disassembled boat fits in a box that is 50 inches long and 9 inches square with just the keel fin and the rudder sticking up. Building is slightly more involved than with the T37. Anyone who has built a T37 will find that the T50/3 is a great follow-up project. If you have some previous model building experience or are fairly good with other projects around the house, the T50/3 will not be a difficult project. If you really have never built anything before, you may want to start with the T37 RC Sailboat kit and work up to building the T50/3 RC Trimaran. Everything required for building, including the radio control gear, is included in the kit except for varnish and batteries. Clear instructions with pictures and diagrams make the building process fun and straightforward. Due to its size, the T50/3 uses a powerful sail winch to control the sails. A standard servo controls the balanced rudder.
